Eagles Fall In Sections

The Becker-Big Lake Eagles hockey team’s season came to a close with a 3-1 Section 5A tournament loss to Northern Lakes Tuesday at Breezy Point.

“Eagles started slow and let Northern Lakes pushed hard and capitalized on a couple defensive mistakes to go up 2-0 after first,” said Eagles Coach Jason Hartfiel.

“Second period we cleaned mistakes but still outshot by a few. Third we brought it to them, had couple breakaways but didn’t cash in.”

The Eagles would finally get one with seven minutes left in the final period. Max Nelson put the final goal in for the Eagles’ season with an assist from Weston Schug.

“Pushed hard to the end. There was about 5 minutes span with no whistle,” said Coach Hartfiel. “We pulled Piehl with about 45 secs left. Got a couple good chances to no avail. (We) played a decent game,  just needed the desperation play to start a little sooner.”

Despite the loss, it was a good season for the Eagles. The team had 10 wins, second most ever since their 2013-2014 standout season.

“So long to our five seniors Weston Schug, Aubrey Hartfiel, Alec Doran, Max Nelson and Logan Beckstrom,” added Coach Beckstrom.

Two seniors a broke single season scoring record that stood at 41.  Schug finished with 50 and Hartfiel with 52.

Hartfiel also was awarded Fan’s Choice Top Performer by Hockey Hub for his performance last week in the 13-3 win over Bagley-Fosston. The season ended with a record of 10-15.
