Eagles End Season With Mixed Results

The Eagles concluded their regular season on the road with one win and one loss, ending their season at 10-15, their best season record since the 2013-2014 season when they were 13-11. The beat Bagley Saturday but lost to Sauk Rapids Tuesday.

The Eagles 10th and final win of the regular season came against a much smaller Bagley-Fosston team, which the Eagles dominated 13-3 Saturday.
 
“Game started slow, eagles had hard time completing passes. Tied 1-1 after 1,” said Coach Jason Hartfiel. “One of our worst periods of hockey.” 
 
Max Nelson, Aubrey Hartfiel assist, was the first goal of the game in the first period.
 
In the second period, the Eagles turned on the heat with two goals in the first 60 seconds. The first of those goals came from Jacob Bahe with an assist from Corbin Kollar. Max Nelson scored the second goal with an assist from Weston Schug.
 
The Eagles kept going. Aubrey Hartfiel scored the third goal of the period two minutes later with help from Tucker Rhodes and Max Nelson. Weston Shug continued the momentum with a goal of his own with assists from Aubrey Hartfiel and Max Nelson. The Eagles were up 5-2 by the middle of the second period.
 
“Bagley called timeout to ‘stop the bleeding’. It didn’t work,” said Coach Hartfiel. “It became high scoring game after Bagley kept marching to the penalty box, two in at once on 10 minute penalties. They only had 9 skaters.” 
 
The next four goals for the Eagles would be power plays resulting from those penalties. Logan Beckstrom scored first with assists from Hartfiel and Schug. Schug scored two consecutive goals assisted by Hartfiel both goals and Nelson and Beckstrom split between those two goals.
 
The Eagles had a comfortable 8-3 lead going into the third period, but were not done scoring, scoring five more goals.
 
Schug capitalized on the last power play, scoring his fourth goal of the night. Assisting were Hartfiel and Alec Doran. Logan Beckstrom extended the Eagles lead to 10-3 with his second goal of the night a few minutes later. Corbin Kollar scored his first goal of the night with help from Alec Doran, followed by Hartfiel’s second goal that was assisted by Schug ant Nate Kerzman.
 
Austin Rydberg scored the Eagles final goal of the season with help from Luke Mehelich. The clock hit zero and the Eagles were on top 13-3.
 
The Eagles had four minutes in the penalty box for two infractions. Bagley spent 25 minutes in the penalty box for three major infractions, two of which were 10-minute misconduct penalties.
 
The Eagles had 38 shots against the Bagley goal. Caden Weber held the goal, facing 24 shots, saving 21.
 
With combined goals and assists, Schug with 7 points while Hartfiel with 8 points. Hartfiel was nominated for Hockey Hub’s performance of the week, voting ends Feb 18.
 
Eagles 0, Sauk Rapids 3
The Eagles ended their season at Sauk Rapids-Rice with a shutout loss Tuesday.
 
The Eagles were on defense most of the night, managing only 18 shots on the goal compared to Sauk Rapids’ massive offensive number of 50 shots on the Eagles’ goal.
 
“We played much better than our last outing 9-0,” said Coach Hartfiel. “They are a faster skating team. Proud of our play.”
 
Zach Piehl tended the goal the game’s entirety, saving 47 of the 50 shots on the goal. Sauk Rapids-Rice scored two goals in the first period and their third goal in the second period.
 
The Eagles served 16 minutes in the penalty box for eight infractions. Sauk Rapids served half the minutes for half the penalties.
 
It wraps up the Eagles’ regular season, a 10-15 record. Hartfiel had 52 points this season with 18 goals and 34 assists. Schug wasn’t far behind with 49 points, he led the Eagles with 30 goals and trailed Hartfiel with 19 assists.
