The Becker/Big Lake hockey team went on the road Tuesday night and defeated Cambridge-Isanti 3-1 behind a stellar performance from goalie Thomas Zerwas.
The senior netminder earned the win by stopping 39 out of 40 shots, good for a 97.5% save percentage. He received some help from the team’s penalty kill, who held the opponents to just one power play goal on six attempts.
Owen Zahler put the Eagles on the board less than a minute into the game off an assist from Tanner Felton. But C-I tied things up before the period was over.
From then on, Zerwas stopped all 27 shots he faced in the last two periods and Tate Spilde added two goals to earn the team a win.
Vs. Princeton
Last Thursday, the Eagles lost 7-1 to the Princeton Tigers. The team trailed 5-0 before Hayden Kipka found Carter Tatge for a third period power play goal.
Vs. Blades
And on Saturday, the team traveled north to take on Breckenridge/Wahpeton. The Blades led 4-1 early in the third period and held on late to earn a 4-3 victory over Becker/Big Lake.
Ethan Grafnitz scored in the first with a power play goal. Then the home team scored three unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead. But Brant Rusin found the back of the net off an assist from Raymond Clark, and Owen Zahler scored a short-handed goal to bring the Eagles within a goal late in the game. However, the team was unable to tie it, and Breckenridge/Wahpeton survived.
