The Becker boys and girls track teams competed in the Section 8AA preliminaries Wednesday in Willmar. Several athletes advanced to the finals in Moorhead and many set personal records along the way.

Boys Track

David Myres will compete at Saturday’s finals in both the 110M hurdles and the 300M hurdles.  Myres ran a personal best 40.66 and lowered his school record as well in the 300M hurdles.

Kevin Andres finally broke the 50 second mark in the 400M by winning his heat with a time of 49.90.  Andres will enter Saturday's finals with the top seed in the event.

Austin Hemmelgarn entered Wednesday as the top seed in the 100M and easily cruised to a victory in his heat and will run for a chance to go to state Saturday.

Sidney Boros held up his part by winning his heat in the 200M and will run for a chance to go to state.

“We have a lot going on in the meet Saturday,” said Head Coach Paul Schmidt. “It should be fun to compete for state berth chances.”

Sam Ricker finished in sixth place in the 3200M with his top time of the year of 9:54.40.  The event was a final, but Ricker gets a chance to run the 1600M for an opportunity to go to state.

Personal bests were also achieved by some of the athletes who did not advance.  Brayden Weber ran a personal best of 25.15 in the 200M. Justin Kringler had a PR in the 800M with a 2:04.71.  Lukas Paulson vaulted 10 feet for a personal best in that event. Basil Ricker ran a personal best in the 3200M with a time of 10:25.19.

All relays will be run as finals in Moorhead.

Girls Track

The Becker girls had seven athletes achieve personal records Wednesday.

Alli Hendrickson placed sixth in the 3200 meters with a PR time of 11:34.28.

“This was a very talented field of runners and Alli stayed with the leaders most of the way,” said Head Coach Trish Reimer-Kealy. “I’m very proud of her efforts and it was nice to cap off her career in this event with her PR time.”

Also in the 3200M,  Victoria Kolbinger (12:34.92) and Abby Nelson (13:09.76) ran well.

In the prelims for running events, Cassidy Pleoger had a great day, moving on in both the 100 meters (PR time 12.942) and the 200M (PR time of 26.59). Her time in the 200 earns her a spot on the MSHSL honor roll.

Becker’s hurdlers failed to advance with each runner hitting hurdles and crashing down.  Unfortunately, Miranda O'Brien was one of those who crashed.  She was leading her heat quite handily but hit the final hurdle and tried valiantly to stay on her feet. She ended up somersaulting over the finish line. After all heats finished, she placed 10th, missing out  since they only take eight to finals.

Kayden Westin suffered a similar fate as she battled for first in her heat with two other girls. Westin  was pushing ahead over hurdle number eight when she caught her toe on the apparatus and stumbled to finish.  Callie Doucette was the only Becker girl to make a clean run and she placed third in her heat.

The 300M hurdles went better for Becker with Westin running a very good PR of 50.03 — just missing out on finals by two spots. O’Brien ran well with a time of 51.05.

In the girls 400M, Keeley Holm was third in her heat with a time of 64.14 and Jessica Gruenes had 66.17. Neither runner advanced.

Each of our Becker’s girls in the 800M earned PR times with Dani Nuest running very well for 12th place  (top eight go to finals) with a really good time of 2:25.48 which moves her up on Becker's honor roll. Alyssa Gruenes ran 2:46.62 and Whitney Schug ran 2:47.4.92.

In field event finals, Hendrickson jumped 4'10" and Alli Garding 4'6".

In the long jump, Jessica Gruenes cleared 15'1 3/4 and Cienna Pleoger 14'11 1/2.

In the discus, Madi Kerzman placed 11th  with a nice throw of 101'6 to finish off her high school career in that event.  She will throw shot put Saturday. McKenna Edling threw 81'0" and Lauren Gizzi 76'4".
