Dazzlers Polishing Routines As Sections Near

The Becker Dazzlers dance team competed against Frazee, Pelican Rapids, Detroit Lakes, Bemidji, Fergus Falls-Underwood, United Clay-Becker and Wadena-Deer Creek last Saturday and took first place in JV kick, third in varsity kick, fourth in varsity jazz and fourth in JV jazz.

The invitational was held at Underwood High School in Fergus Falls.

Varsity Kick

In the varsity kick event, Pelican Rapids (eighth place in the Class A state tournament last year) earned the first place spot, followed by Frazee (10th at state last year).

Becker was third behind two teams that traditionally advance to the state tournament.

“We were up against some tough competitors and the Becker athletes definitely were in the competition for the top spots,” said Coach Julie Baloun. “Our kick routine is unlike any other we have seen this year and the girls really know how to bring the energy and stamina needed to perform it to the fullest.”

Baloun says she is happy to see all of this season’s hard work pay off in the rankings they are receiving from the judges.

Varsity Jazz

In the varsity jazz event, Frazee (fifth place at state last year) took first place, just beating out Pelican Rapids (10th at state last year) who finished second. Detroit Lakes garnered third place while Becker took home fourth.

“I was very proud of the girls at this competition,” said Head Coach Laura Anderson. “We had some very strong talent to compete against and we continue to identify growth opportunities that help us build our rankings. Competing against teams that have advanced to the state tournament is always motivating to the athletes to be stronger and better in skills and technique.”

Anderson said her team came away feeling good about their performance yet knowing they have room to grow.

“I was happy with our performance and our scores in execution,” she said. “We lost a few points to the top three teams in technique (turns, leaps and jumps) and difficulty of skills. Our scores were strong in visual effectiveness and creativity as well. Our goal this week in preparation for the Section 2AA Tournament will be to continue to work on technique opportunities and to challenge the girls in areas where we can gain additional difficulty points.”

Junior Varsity

The JV kick team delivered a strong routine and took home the first place trophy for the high kick event. The JV jazz team placed fourth.
