Cieslak Leads Bulldogs To Two More Wins

The Becker girls softball team swept a doubleheader Tuesday and  improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the Granite Ridge Conference.

Game One
Becker 11, Foley 0

The Bulldogs scored three in the first inning and didn't stop as they scored at least one run in five of the six innings.

The game ended on a three-run home run by Allison Cieslak, her second home run of the year.

Haley Harmon dominated on the mound and picked up the win while pitching a no-hitter.  She went all six innings, striking out 12 while walking only one.

Game Two
Becker 6, Foley 3

Despite hosting the game, Becker was designated the visiting team in the second game and scored first when Allison Cieslak doubled and scored on a Falcon throwing error.   Foley answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when a triple and an error allowed the run to come home to tie the score.

The score remained 1-1 until the top of the fifth when Cieslak hit another double and Payton Williams bunted her to third. Cieslak scored on a sacrifice fly by Cassie Althoff.

The Falcons jumped in the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Ellie Manderfeld hit a two-run home run to give the Falcons the 3-2 lead.

After a scoreless sixth, Becker was down to their final out in the seventh when Marikate Wegeleben stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered a grand slam to score four runs to put the game out of reach.

Harmon and Maddy Mohrman split duties on the mound.  Mohrman went three innings and allowed two runs while striking out three and walking one.  Harmon picked up the win by going four innings and allowing one run on one hit, while striking out eight.

Leading hitters on the night were Cieslak, who went  5-for-6 with three doubles, a home run, six runs scored and three RBIs. Sam Lorette was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Kadee Vesledahl was 2-for-4 with a double.

The Bulldogs hosted a doubleheader Friday against Little Falls (full report on games in next week’s Citizen).

Next week is busy, with a game at Cathedral  Tuesday, a game at Zimmerman Thursday and then the Bulldogs host their annual varsity tournament  Saturday.  Saturday's games are at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.

“We have eight good softball teams coming, so it should be a great day of softball,” said Head Coach Jason Baune.
