Buzzards subdue the Geezers, Riverdogs

The Becker Buzzards baseball team picked up a pair of victories at their home field Saturday, downing the Verndale Geezers 2-1 in the opening game of the split doubleheader before finishing off the Fergus Falls Riverdogs 6-1 in the nightcap.

In the opening game, Becker found itself fighting from behind as the Geezers put a run across home plate in the second inning and made it hold up until the bottom of the fifth.  That’s when the Buzzards’ bats finally came alive as Nick Allerson coaxed a one out walk and he was followed by three straight singles from teammates Jason Pfingsten, Todd Klaers and Jason Wald to give the Buzzards a 2-1 lead.

It turned out to be all they would need as Brian Kolbinger was solid on the mound, scattering four hits over his 6 innings of work to pick up the win before Pfingsten slammed the door in the 7th inning for the save.

Game two was another pitcher’s duel early as the Buzzards and Riverdogs exchanged zeroes on the board until the bottom of the 4th.  Matt Koester finally led off with a single and he was followed by 3 straight Buzzard walks to plate one run and load the bases for Becker.  Steve Newman singled to score 2 runs and his at-bat was followed by a pair of walks before a Klaers single scored a pair of runs to make it 6-0.  The Riverdogs added a meaningless run in the 7th inning to make the final 6-1. Tanner Bakke worked 5 innings on the mound to pick up the win, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3 batters.  Todd Klaers finished out the game throwing the final 2 innings to close out the win.

The Buzzards are now 3-0 on the season and host the Alexandria Classic Clippers in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the Becker Athletic Complex.  Game times are 2:00 and 4:00.
