Buzzards Close Out Season With Split From Last Weekend

Saturday, the Becker Buzzards baseball team lost 6-2 in eight innings against the Cold Spring Silver Springers at the BAC in Becker.

Cold Spring got on the board in the first inning to take an early lead but the Buzzards tied it up in the third.

The Silver Springers regained the lead at 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning and Becker knotted the score again in the fifth to keep the game tight.

Becker had their chances to take the lead in the sixth inning with two men in scoring position but couldn't push the go ahead run across.
The Cold Spring defense held tight once again in the bottom of the seventh as the Buzzards stranded a man on third and the game went into extra innings.

The Silver Springers captured the win in the eighth inning with back-to-back doubles and a three-run home run.

Buzzard Deron Trovall collected two of the eight hits for the Buzzards.

Jason Pfingsten took the loss on the mound as he pitched all eight innings for the Buzzards.

“We hit the ball really well today,” Co-Manager Trovall  said. “We just didn't get the hits when we needed them. Cold Spring is a tough team. They've played together since they were kids and they won several state championships back in the 80's and 90's.”

Buzzards 14, A’s 2

Sunday, the Buzzards took their frustration out on the Apple Valley A's, outscoring Apple Valley by a dozen runs in six innings. Becker pounded out 13 hits and scored in every inning of the game.

Pfingsten hit his third home run of the season and Jeff Haus provided an RBI double that scored Mike Doetkott in the bottom of the sixth to decide the game via the mercy rule.

“This was a great win before the NSCBL State Tournament,” Mark Graham said.

The Buzzards will play the Monticello Ol' Cats at Alimagnet Park in Burnsville Saturday in the first round of the NSCBL state tournament. They will try to avenge an earlier regular season loss of 5-0 to Monticello back on July 27.

If the Buzzards win, they will advance to play the Alexandria Clippers who they split a double header with on the road July 19.
