Practicing after school every day in the field house wrestling room, the Becker Bulldogs wrestling team is looking forward to a great season.
As an experienced coach, Matt Aho knows what needs to be done for the team to put forth its best effort. This is his 10th year as head coach for Becker and his 17th year coaching overall.
“Right now, we’re focused on getting better every day,” said Aho. “Our team has been working hard in the off-season lifting and conditioning. Now we’re just getting ready to compete.”
The team, which is a mix of over 40 youth and veteran athletes from 7th to 12th grade, officially started practicing Nov. 19. Assistant coaches Jeff Zimmer, Dustin Weege, Daniel Rooney, Luke Salzer, DeWayne Sommerdorf and Jaydon Grommersch have been on hand to add their expertise.
This year’s Bulldogs wrestling captains are Kevin Andres, Logan Jurek and Jake Nelson. Wrestler Lukas Paulson is currently ranked 10th in State in Class AA.
The team’s first Granite Ridge Conference meet was a quad against Pine City/Hinckley-Finlayson, St. Agnes and Monticello at home Friday night.
“Right now, we’re focused on this week’s competition and being one-percent better every day,” said Aho earlier in the week. “We have to bring a positive: attitude – intensity – motivation. If we do that we’ll have a great season and we’ll make a strong run come section time.”
Last year the Bulldogs achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.640 for the season.
