The win streak is over.
The Orono Spartans throttled the Becker Bulldogs last Friday night in each team’s season opener, 21-0. It was Becker’s first lost since their playoof loss to Rocori in 2024. Last year they coasted to a 13-0 record culminating in a Class 4A Prep Bowl win.
However, as they say, “don’t let yesterday take up too much of today” and the Spartans made sure of that as they kept Becker at bay and never let the Bulldogs get on the board throughout the contest. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Spartans just coasted through the last quarter.
Becker gained just 96 total yards versus 279 for Orono as the Spartans shut down all areas of Becker’s offense from opening kickoff to the final horn.
Orono quarterback Griffin Mauer passed for a touchdown and ran for another in the convincing win.
Becker QB Tristan Kowalkowski struggled in his first game behind center, throwing for just 55 yards on 10-of-21 passing and two interceptions.
Isiah Boyer led the rushing attack with 27 yards on nine carries.
On the other side of the ball, Nate Weiss was an animal , chasing down Spartan players from sideline to sideline. Weiss finioshed with an incredible 13 tackles while Bennett Kujawahad eight tackles, one sack and two tackles for loss.
With the defeat, Becker drops to 0-1 on the campaign. The Bulldogs host Hutchinson this Friday, Sept. 5. The Tigers come into the test with a record of 1-0 after they beat Princeton, 20-7 in their opening game last week.
