Bulldogs girls basketball has busy summer

Summer may officially be considered the offseason for the Becker girls basketball program, but Head Coach Dan Baird and the team stayed plenty busy during the past two months.

In addition to refining its own game on the court in several competitions, the team also found time to inspire the next generation of girls basketball players through an extensive developmental camp offering.

“We had just under 100 girls attend camp this summer which was amazing,” Baird said.

The camps offered the younger, aspiring players not only the chance to work on their individual skills, but also the chance to interact with returning members of the Lady Bulldogs varsity team who captured the state title just this past season.

On the court, Baird and his team also had a chance to participate in several tournaments.

“Our Varsity team attended Wisconsin Dells in June and had a record of 5-1,” Baird said.   “Then we brought our incoming ninth and 10th graders back there in July, bringing 26 girls from our program to the Dells for some fun in the sun, and a little basketball too.”

Baird’s varsity team also won the Breakdown’s Summer State Tournament in June, defeating Hutchinson, Benilde St. Margaret and Como Park en route to the title.

“We had a great summer put in by our incoming ninth and 10th graders,” Baird said. “They worked hard at open gyms, Breakdown Tournaments, SCSU league, etc., – not only did this help their individual games but it is sure to strengthen our program as well.”
