Bulldogs Finish 7 1, Hope For Long Playoff Run

The Becker Bulldog football team closed out their impressive regular season last week with wins over Willmar and Sartell to finish at 7-1.

Becker 38, Sartell 6

Wednesday, Becker traveled to Sartell High School to take on the 1-6 Sabers. Weather conditions were much-improved and the Bulldogs easily rolled over Sartell by 32.

Fobbe was dynamic, passing for 207 yards on 20-of-29 passing with three TDs. He also directed a strong running game where 244 yards were amassed by six ground gainers. Isaac Koop led all rushers with 79 yards on nine carries and two scores — one on the ground and one through the air.

Becker jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter when Fobbe found Hietala from 15 yards out. The two-point conversion was good when Fobbe found Nick Mittelstaedt in the end zone to make it 8-0.

The Bulldogs would put the pedal to the metal in the second quarter where they would score three touchdowns to put the game out of reach by halftime. Callahan scored from five yards out to make it 16-0, then Koop scored his first from 13 yards out as Fobbe dropped a pass into his open arms for the score. Luke Eigen capped off the three-touchdown quarter with a five-yard TD reception from Fobbe to put the score at 30-0 after two quarters.

The Sabers caught a glimmer of hope when RB Ethan Torgrimson knifed his way through the Becker “D” for an 86-yard TD to make it 30-6, however, the Bulldogs drowned those hopes when Koop scored from 11 yards out a little while later to seal the deal.

The Bulldogs finished with 451 yards to Sartell’s 167. Becker had 26 first downs to Sartell’s six and the Bulldogs were 11-of-12 (92%) in third down efficiency.

Hietala finished with 90 yards on  five catches and one TD. Mittelstaedt had 36 yards on five catches  and converted two, two-point conversions.

DeWall led the defense with six tackles and one assist. Brayden Weber had five tackles, two assists, one sack and one tackle for a loss.

Becker 12, Willmar 0

On a cold, blustery and snowy night last Friday, the Bulldogs took on the Cardinals of Willmar on the road and escaped with a two-touchdown win.

The first TD came in the first quarter when QB Josh Fobbe found Austin Berning from nine yards out to put the visitors on top  early in the game. A failed two-point conversion attempt kept the score at 6-0, and that;s where most of the game remained as field conditions and abominable weather caused havoc for both teams.

Though Willmar’s defense gave up just 12 points, it was once again Becker’s defense that stood tall, allowing just 126 total yards and no scores. The Bulldog defense has given up just 57 points in eight games — that’s an average of just seven points a game.

Becker amassed 192 yards against Willmar with 123 of those yards coming via the ground game. Isaac Koop managed to rumble for 89 yards on 19 carries including a 19-yard scamper. Cade Callahan had 49 yards on nine carries and Berning one yard on one carry.

Late in the fourth quarter, the offense put together a late drive to bury the Cardinals when Fobbe found Carter Hietala from 15 yards out to record the only other TD of the game. Another two-point conversion attempt failed, but it didn’t matter as Becker held on for the double-digit win.

Thomas Halvorson led the defense with 11 tackles and two assists. Cade DeWall had nine tackles and one assist and Teddy Halvorson had seven tackles, one assist, one sack and one tackle for loss.
