Bulldogs escape Plymouth with 4-point win

The Becker Bulldog football team improved to 2-0 on the season after defeating Providence Academy Lions last Friday by a score of 13-9.

It was a hard-fought battle for both teams as most of the scoring occurred in the first half.

The Lions made a statement early in the game, stopping the Bulldogs on downs on their first drive of the game.

Providence got on the board first when they drove into Becker territory but stalled inside the 20. Sam Huebschen nailed a 26-yard field goal and the Lions had an early, 3-0 lead.

However, the Bulldogs  mounted an impressive drive later in the second quarter and capped it off with a two yard TD run by Owen Angell to go up 7-3.

Later in the quarter, the Lions had a drive of their own that resulted in a TD when QB Magnus Hansen found Matthew Hunterfrom 15 yards out with under a minute left in the first half to put the halftime score at 9-7 in favor of the Lions.

The third quarter went scoreless as well as most of the fourth until the Bulldogs drove to the Lions’ goal line and finished it off with a four-yard plunge by Cody Klatt to go up 13-9.

The Bulldogs tried for a two-point conversion but  a pass from Sawyer Brown to Kaden Nicholas proved unsuccessful.

Becker held on the rest of the way to capture the win.

Brown was seven-of-eight for 63 yards. Angell finished with 14 yards on seven carries and the one score. Klatt gained 44 yards on six carries and one score.

Mitchell Soltau had four catches for 30 yards to lead all receivers.

On defense, Landen Kujawa had four tackles and eight assists. Nicholas had two tackles and eight assists.

Becker finished with 154 total yards on 42 plays while Providence Academy had 178 yards on 54 plays. The Bulldogs had 63 yards on the ground and 91 yards through the air. The Lions had 137 yards on the ground and 37 yards through the air.

Becker finsihed with eight first downs to PA’s 11.

The Bulldogs will try and stay undefeated as they traveled to Holy Angels Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.
