Bulldog Vfw Team Takes Fifth At State

The Becker VFW Baseball team finished in fifth place at the 2014 VFW State Tournament held in Brainerd, Aug. 7 against the state’s best teams.

The Bulldogs opened up the double elimination tournament with a 7-4 loss to Ranview (Cretin Durham Hall).

Becker bounced back to defeat a really good Mankato team, 4-3 with some timely hitting and quality bunting to stave off elimination. The win moved them on to day two of the tournament where they took on and defeated Champlin Park. The Bulldogs put on a great defensive performance and avoided elimination once again.

In Becker’s second game of day two, only five teams remained and the Bulldogs were matched up with a mighty Alexandria team. The tournament run ended for Becker as Alexandria pulled out the 7-5 victory.

“Overall, the boys played some of their best defense of the summer and hitters 1-9 contributed offensively,” said Coach Corey Stanger.
The team finished the season with a 21-12 record and their first state tournament berth.

Team members were: Cody Gruenhagen (catcher/pitcher), Clayton Gallus (outfield/ pitcher), Jake Fobbe (outfield/ pitcher), Tyler Thorson (infield), John Mann (infield/ pitcher), Austin Rasmussen, (outfield), Matt Yoerg (outfield/ pitcher), Casey Vesledahl (infield/pitcher), Beau Pauly (infield/pitcher), Andrew Stanger (infield/pitcher) and Andrew Berglund (infield).

The team was coached by Corey Stanger and Dennis Yoerg.
