Bulldog tennis team continues its roll

The Becker boys tennis team continues to pile up the wins over the competition, winning 4 matches in the past week to push its record to 10-2 overall.

Last Thursday, it was a clean sweep over the North Branch Vikings in a Mississippi8 Conference matchup with the Bulldogs winning 7-0.

“It was a beautiful day for tennis,” Coach Hokan Bengtson said.  “I was impressed with our young guys today, they are getting better each match.”

In the singles matches, #1 player Zach Bengtson continued his dominance with a 6-1, 6-1 win, while #2 Luke Bordson was also on point, defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-0.

Landon Peterson played in the #3 spot and won 6-0, 6-3 while Troy Nuest anchored the singles matches again and won in convincing fashion 6-0, 6-0.

THe #1 doubles team of Ryan Bengtson and Eli Scheideman cruised to a pair of 6-0 victories for the win, while Wyatt Hiltner and Sawyer Brown teamed up in the #2 spot and won handily, 6-1, 6-1.  Bruce Kraemer and Nick Gruber finished the rout with a pair of 6-0 victories to give Becker the win.

Spuds

Last Friday, the Bulldogs took on Section foe Moorhead and completely dominated the Spuds, 7-0.

“Moorhead is a Section 8AA opponent, so I was interested to see how our guys would respond in this match,” Bengtson said.   “We came out focused and ready to go — we used a little different line-up and it was effective.”

Becker put up a singles lineup of Zach Bengtson, Ryan Bengtson, Bordson and Scheideman; each came away with a convincing victory over his respective opponent.

In the doubles matches, all the new combinations were effective as well, including the #1 team of Hiltner and Brown, who donned their opponents 6-1, 6-0.

Peterson and Gruber teamed up for a 6-0, 6-4 win at #2, while Beau Biegler and Nuest held down the #3 spot with a 6-2, 6-0 win.

Knights

The competition was much more difficult in Friday’s second match, as the Bulldogs were able to defeat STMA by a score of 5-2.

“It was a big win versus a solid STMA team,” Bengtson said.   “We had excellent play by our #1 Doubles team - winning decisively against a good STMA pair.”

Zach Bengtson started things off in the singles matches with a solid, 6-4, 6-0 win, while Bordson followed with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win at #2.  Nuest again showed why he is one of the better 7th graders in the state with a big 6-3, 6-1 win to give Becker a 3-1 record in singles for the match.

In doubles play, Scheideman and R. Bengtson were again outstanding, winning 6-0, 6-1 over a very tough pair for the Knights.  Hiltner teamed up with Peterson to secure the Becker victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the #2 doubles match.

With the wins, the Bulldogs move to 10-2 on the season.  Tuesday’s match in Cambridge was postponed because of rain.  Check out next week’s Patriot for complete coverage of the Bulldog boys tennis team and their matches against Monticello and Anoka.
