Bulldog tennis serving up wins

The Becker boys tennis team keeps rolling, collecting wins regardless of the competition.

Monday, the Bulldogs scored wins over perennial powers Foley and Alexandria.

In the opening match, Becker out-dueled the Falcons, 5-2.

“Our first match was a battle against the Champions of the Granite Ridge Conference, the Foley Falcons and we tried a new line-up to prepare for section play,” Coach Hokan Bengtson said. “This was a good match for some of our guys to play in spots they normally don’t play and stretch them.”

Zach Bengtson won easily at #1 singles and Becker swept the doubles.  Troy Nuest also played a tough match at #2 singles and came out on top in back to back tiebreakers.

Becker wins: Zach Bengtson 6-0, 6-0, Nuest 7-6 (1), 7-6 (4), Doubles: Eli Scheideman/Ryan Bengtson 6-2, 6-3; Landon Peterson/Sawyer Brown 6-0, 6-4; Nick Gruber/Max Haugen 6-1, 6-2.

In the second match, Becker played Section 8AA opponent Alexandria and won 6-1.

“We played very well at all positions - not dropping a set in doubles and cleanly winning 1 through 3 singles,” Bengtson said.  “At #4 singles, Adler had a tough match and really battled a player from Alex that had a very interesting style of play. He definitely learned during this match and will be better for it.”

Becker wins: Z. Bengtson 6-1, 6-2; R. Bengtson 6-3, 6-1; Nuest 6-1, 6-0.  Doubles: Scheideman/Peterson 6-2, 6-1; Gruber/Brown 6-2, 6-4; Lane/Haugen 6-1, 7-6 (2).

Storm

Tuesday, Becker traveled to Chanhassen to take on the Storm and came out with another impressive victory, 6-1.

“We had a great match at Chanhassen, the guys were focused and played very well,” Bengtson said “I was especially impressed with our doubles play. All three teams are playing excellent and finishing points well.”

Ryan Bengtson picked up the win at #2 singles, 6-0, 6-1, followed by Nuest’s win by a score of 6-2, 6-0. Herdina was dominant in the other singles match, winning 6-0 in both sets.

In doubles play, Scheideman/Peterson teamed up for the 6-0, 6-2 win, followed by Gruber/Brown in the #2 spot with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. Lane and Haugen finished it up with a 6-4, 6-1 win.

Becker improved to 16-1 overall heading into Thursday’s M8 title tilt with Monticello.

M8

Last Thursday, the Bulldogs kept their Mississippi8 streak alive with a win at Chisago Lakes.

“We were missing a couple guys and still other kids stepped up and played well,” Bengtson said. “I was really proud of how we competed and finished shots. Our singles guys are starting to really dial in their strategies.”

Zach Bengtson was red hot, sweeping his opponent at #1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, while his brother Ryan also picked up a win at #2 singles, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Troy Nuest won 6-0, 6-1 and Adler Herdina was spot-on, winning a pair of 6-1 sets.

Scheideman/Peterson combined at #1 doubles to win 6-1, 6-3, followed by the duo of Max Haugen/Sawyer Brown with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Jon Drury and Garett Lane battled at the #3 spot before falling 5-7, 7-5, 2-6.

With the win, Becker remained undefeated at 6-0 in the M8 with Thursdays battle against Monticello the only obstacle to another conference title.
