The Becker boys tennis team continues to play great, as they pushed their record to 18-3 with a very busy week full of wins.
The one speed bump in the road was last week’s 5-2 loss to Lakeville North, one of the largest schools in the state.
“We learned a lot and had an excellent chance to grow at all positions,” Coach Hokan Bengtson said. “We tried some new combinations and we were able to learn and grow as a team!”
Brock Herdina won his singles match, while the Jon Drury/Nathan Weiss doubles duo was also victorious.
Becker bounced back last Friday with a 7-0 shutout of Duluth East.
“It was a good match tonight versus an excellent opponent,” Bengtson said immediately following the contest. “Our kids showed growth from the Lakeville match on Wednesday, already implementing some changes and improving on the details of their assignments.”
Singles winners included Troy Nuest, Adler Herdina, Sawyer Brown and Brock Herdina. In the doubles, it was Carter Ager/Garett Lane winning in the top spot, followed by Drury/Weiss and Ryan Zabinski/John Boecker.
Monday night, Becker downed a very good Sartell team, 4-3 in the opening round of a triangular before defeating perennial powerhouse Foley, 5-2.
“We faced great competition tonight,” Bengtson said. “We played a solid Sartell team and really competed well . . . Sawyer and Troy are starting to show their experience in the way they finish points and matches.”
Becker then downed an excellent Falcons squad.
“They had eight seniors and really showed their experience, they are ranked #7 in Class A right now,” Bengtson said after the match. “But our kids fought hard and we won three of the four singles headlined by a huge win by John Boecker! Sawyer and Carter continued to play great at doubles!”
Nuest, Adler Herdina and Boecker picked up the singles wins, with Brown/Ager and Brock Herdina/Zabinski winning in the doubles category.
Becker rounded out the win streak Tuesday evening by trouncing Princeton, 6-1.
“It was a good match tonight with Princeton,” Bengtson said. “Our guys continue to improve and peak as we head into playoffs.”
Nuest and the Herdina’s won singles matches, while Ager/Brown, Weiss/Lane and Zabinski/Drury were the doubles victors.
Becker is now 18-3 overall and 4-1 in the Mississippi 8 Conference.
