Bulldog tennis cruising to wins

The Becker boys tennis team is piling up the wins, as the team has been firing on all cylinders in both singles and doubles matches.

Last Friday, the Bulldogs hosted a Triangular and came away with a pair of wins over both Pine City and Alexandria.

“We played two great matches today against solid opponents,” Coach Hokan Bengtson said immediately following the match.

Against the Dragons, Becker won 5-2 behind some great singles action.

“We played well in this match,  especially in singles,” Bengtson said.  “Our kids were in four, third set tiebreakers, and we won three of the four tiebreaks.  It was a great demonstration of mental toughness.  I was proud of how we competed in those close matches.”

In the second match of the day, Becker downed a very good Alexandria team, 4-3.

“Again, our singles players really played well and our doubles teams started to improve,” Bengtson said.  “Especially number one doubles where Sawyer and Garett showed their mental toughness and grit.”

Troy Nuest, Adler Herdina and Brock Herdina picked up wins in the two through four singles matches, while Sawyer Brown and Garett Lane were 6-3, 6-1 winners in the deciding #1 doubles match.

Saints

Tuesday night, the Dogs took down St. Francis, 7-0 in a dominating performance.

“The Saints have a young team this year and our guys were ready to compete,” Bengtson said.  “I was proud of our focus and desire to get better today!”

Landon Peterson took a 6-0, 6-1 win at #1 singles, followed by 6-0, 6-0 wins from Nuest and the Herdina brothers to round out singles play.

In doubles, all three teams won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.  Brown/Lane started it off at the top and also coming in victorious were Jon Drury/Carter Ager and Nathan Weiss/Matthew Warhol.

With the win, Becker moved to 5-1 overall, 1-0 in the conference.
