Bulldog tennis continues to dominate

The Becker Bulldog tennis team continues to show dominance in piling up the wins, as the team’s singles and doubles players are gelling.

Triangular

Last Thursday, Becker won both matches in a triangular, starting with a 7-0 win over Duluth Marshall.

“We played really well in the first match of the day, as we are starting to improve at many of the spots in our line-up and are showing signs of maturity,” Coach Hokan Bengtson said.  “I was especially proud of Landon (Peterson) playing #1 singles and gutting out a tough win against a good player.”

In round two, Becker won 6-1 over M8 opponent North Branch in their second conference match of the year.

“It was really a strong showing by many of our spots, but our depth really is starting to show in these matches,” Bengtson said.  “Our doubles guys are learning and growing as they try different strategies and learn to finish points.”

At Tech

Friday, Becker traveled to St. Cloud Tech and came away with an impressive victory over the Tigers in a Section 8AA matchup.

“It was a great battle today between two good teams,” Bengtson said.  “We really are starting to improve at all spots, especially in doubles.  Our #3 doubles team pulled out an excellent win in three sets to secure the victory!”

The win pushed the Bulldogs to 8-1 on the season, as they remain undefeated in conference play.

Vs. Chanhassen

Monday, the Dogs ran into a very good Chanhassen team in a match played in terrible conditions.  Becker came to play and picked up a 6-1 victory.

“Tonight’s match was a tough one with the wind conditions, but our kids really fought hard and showed some grit and determination to finish points,”  Bengtson said.  “Last year we lost to this team 3-4 and I knew they only lost a couple of kids, so it would be really tough.  Our guys are competing and growing as they learn to deal with adversity and change their best each match.”

Singles winners included Troy Nuest and the Herdina brothers (Adler and Brock), while doubles team winners were Sawyer Brown/Carter Ager, Jon Drury/Garett Lane, and Nathan Weiss/Matthew Warhol.

Vs. Buffalo

Tuesday night, Becker downed a very good Buffalo squad, 6-1 in another dominating performance.

“It was a huge match tonight, as we ended Buffalo’s season last year and they were ready for us,” Bengtson said.  “Our guys showed up ready to play.  Our biggest improvement has been in doubles as those guys are really starting to get it.  Our singles lineup was solid as well.”

Nuest was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at #2 singles, while Adler and Brock Herdina each also won their singles matches.

“Troy and Adler remained undefeated and continued to show why they are so good,” Bengtson said.

In doubles play, Brown/Ager were 7-6 (4), 6-2 winners in the top spot, followed by Drury/Lane (7-5, 6-2) and Weiss/Warhol (6-2, 3-6, 6-4).

Becker sits at 10-1 on the season and doesn’t play again until Tuesday, when they host Cambridge.
