Bulldog softball splits in M8 action

The Becker girls softball team played a pair of Mississippi8 Conference softball games last week and went 1-1.  On Thursday, they lost 8-3 to the Big Lake Hornets before blanking Cambridge-Isanti 10-0 on Friday.

In the loss to the Hornets, the Bulldog’s bats were largely silent as Big Lake raced to a 7-1 lead after five innings before the Bulldogs picked up a pair of runs late.

The Hornets got on the board with 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd, but the Bulldogs broke the goose egg with a run in the 4th when Kurstyn Patnode singled and scored on a Makenna Zerwas single.

The Hornets answered with 4 more runs in the 5th to push the lead to 7-1.  Becker scored 2 in the top of the 6th when Jenna Kringler and Maddie Sherman scored.  Big Lake added an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th to push the final score to 8-3.  Patnode took the loss in the circle, while Zerwas was the leading batter with 2 hits.

On Friday, the Bulldogs returned home and defeated Cambridge-Isanti by a score of 10-0 in 6 innings. The game was scoreless until Becker scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd.

“Hannah Bartlett had the big hit with a 2-rbi single,” Coach Jason Baune said.  “We added 4 more runs in the bottom of the 5th.”

In the 5th,  Ellie Gallus and Krista Paulson each posted RBI’s for the Bulldogs.

The game ended on the run rule in the bottom of the 6th when Kyla Henkemeyer scored on a wild pitch to make the score 10-0.

Bulldog pitcher Maddie Sherman got the win, going 6 innings and allowing only 1 hit.  She walked 2 and struck out 8.  Paulson and Bartlett each had 2 hits in the game.

With the split, Becker is now 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the M8 Conference.  Becker’s matchup with St. Francis was postponed due to the weather on Tuesday afternoon.

Thursday, the team was set to travel to Chisago Lakes, while on Saturday they will host a 4-team round robin with game times at 10, 12, and 2.  The competition will be great with section rival Rocori, #1 ranked Maple Lake and Pequot Lakes coming to town for the three games apiece.
