Bulldog Netters Improving Quickly

The Becker Bulldog girls volleyball team went 5-1 this past week, including taking third place in their  tournament last weekend.

Saturday Tourney
Becker hosted West Lutheran, Robbinsdale Cooper, Royalton and Nevis and went 4-1 to take third place in the Becker Tournament of Roses meet.

Against West Lutheran, Becker won the first game, 25-21, then faltered in game two (28-26) but rebounded in game three (15-9) to take the first round match.

In match two, they faced Robbinsdale Cooper and swept them in two games, 25-19 and 25-22.

Match three went to Royalton as the Royals beat the Bulldogs in two games, 25-15 and 25-19.

“The Bulldogs struggled to rack up enough kills against a strong Royalton defense,” said Head Coach Greg Lynch.

The Bulldog girls bounced back and defeated Nevis in three games, 25-21, 19-25, 15-13, to conclude the tournament.

Setter Sydney Bordson had a great day leading the Bulldog offense to three match wins and securing her place as an All Tournament player. Captain and outside hitter, Jessica Gruber — one of Lynch’s strongest all-around players — won her place as an All Tournament player with her dependability as an attacker at the net and as a defensive player in the back court.

Bailee Thorson also had a great tournament as a junior. Normally a defensive specialist, she stepped into the role of the second setter due to an injury.  Thorson's flexibility on the court allowed the Bulldog offense to continue to pound away at opponents through the back three rotations.

Becker 3, Milaca 1
Tuesday, Becker traveled to Milaca and beat the Wolves in a closely-contested match.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 25-23 win in the first game and followed that up with a 25-19 win in game two.

The Wolves wouldn’t go away and took game three, 27-25.

The Bulldogs escaped with the match when they knocked off Milaca in game four, 25-21.

Bulldogs 3, Thunder 0
Thursday, the Bulldogs hosted the Thunder of Zimmerman and captured their fourth win in a row and fifth in six matches.

Becker dominated all three games, winning game one by a score of 25-16, game two by a score of 25-13 and game three by a score of 25-12.

“The team played confidently, taking advantage of a struggling Zimmerman serve,” said Lynch. “We put up a strong defense against all of Zimmerman's hitters.”
