Bulldog matmen top Big Lake, 56-20

The Becker Bulldogs and Big Lake Hornets wrestling teams  met for the first time this season last Thursday at the Big Lake gym, and the Bulldogs came out on top, 56-20.

The Hornets are having a good season so far. But the Bulldogs have been even better. Going into Thursday’s matchup, Becker was ranked as the #3 team in Class AA with five wrestlers ranked in the Top 10 in their weight class.

Thursday, the Bulldogs jumped out on top when Boston Kuschel got a forfeit win at 106 pounds.

Bennett Kujawa increased the lead to 12-0 by pinning Big Lake’s Beau McCrone at 2:11 at 113 pounds.

Cash Stortz got the Hornets on the board at 120 pounds, pinning Tyler Hall at 1:12.

Becker’s Kaden Nicolas, ranked  #2 at 126 pounds, pinned Gavin Jones at 1:37 to put the Bulldogs up, 18-6.

Landon Kujawa of Becker, ranked, #4 at 132 pounds, followed with a pin of Dallas Sibbet at 3:44.

Big Lake’s Zack Smith got some points back at 138 pounds with a 6-4 decision over Drew May.

Nolan Reiter of Big Lake, ranked #4 at 145 pounds, beat Jake Rosenow by tech fall, 18-3 to close the gap to 24-14.

But it was all Becker after that. Ethan Duncombe pinned Joe Murphy at 4:41 at 152 pounds.

Owen Angell pinned Spencer Vold at 0:19 at 160 pounds.

At 170, Adam Jurek beat Gauge Hoffman by tech fall, 28-13.

Dylan Weber won by forfeit at 182.

At 195, Tyson Ricker, ranked #5 at 182, had a default win over Trajan Mussehl.

Lance Lysdal beat Big Lake’s Mason Krebs, 10-3 at 220 for Becker’s final points.

The Hornets got their final points when Kane Lapointe picked up a win by forfeit at 285 pounds.

Both teams are competing this week. The Hornets wrestled at an Invitational at Hutchinson Tuesday. They followed that with a dual meet at Princeton Thursday and Cambridge-Isanti Friday.

The Bulldogs competed in a triangular meet at  St. Michael-Albertville Friday, results next week. They wrestle in a triangular meet Thursday against Rocori and Foley at home starting at 5 p.m.
