Becker resident spends 90th birthday surrounded by family

Long time Becker resident, Lewis Haberman, recently celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by family in his hometown.

Haberman celebrated with his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids, as well as his one surviving sibling, Saturday, July 20th.

The Haberman family has lived in the Becker area since the 1800’s, with Lewis Haberman being born on the family farm off of Co. Rd. 4 (Kolbinger Hill) in 1934. Haberman’s kids say he is so happy to be spending his last few years in the hometown where he was born and raised, although he didn’t live in Becker for his whole life, living in other areas around Sherburne County throughout his life and having lived in Arizona with his partner, Barabara Bonin, for 22 years.

Two years ago, the Patriot Newspaper covered a story about Haberman, who has been a lifelong hunter, about his fantastic feat of shooting two deer in one day during hunting season at the age of 88 years old. Haberman’s health has declined since that time, and he unfortunately has not been able to climb up into the deer stand again, but that has not stopped him from going up to camp with his family every fall as his kids and grandkids go hunting. He passes the time now by playing card games, such as pinochle, showing his younger relatives how it’s done as he wins games proclaiming, “Well, it’s hard to play against professionals!”

When asked if Haberman had any advice for younger hunters, he said, “Don’t leave your deer stand.”

In other words of wisdom, Haberman’s kids say he often says, “Money’s no good unless you spend it.”

He also advises young people to, “Stay in school and study.”
