Bulldog golfers hitting their stride

The Becker boys and girls golf teams are into the second half of their seasons, with both teams improving their scores and looking forward to post season play at the beginning of next month.

Girls

For the girls golf team and Coach Anna Babler, it looks like no opposing teams will stand in their way of a M8 Conference title as the girls picked up another conference win Tuesday in their meet held at The Ponds course in St. Francis.

Becker’s top four golfers carded a total of 365 strokes, 21 better than second place Chisago Lakes’ 386.

“It was another nice conference win for our girls,” Babler said.

Ashley Reed paced the team with a round of 89, good enough for 5th place, while Emma Benson was just one stroke behind at 90, which placed her in 6th place.  Next up was 8th grader Layla Mathews, who carded a nice round of 92 to finish in 8th place, while Kylee Rick and Alexa Voller each scored rounds of 94, finishing in 10th and 11th place, respectively.

Next up for the girls was another conference meet held Wednesday at Purple Hawk course in Cambridge and then a section preview held Friday in Park Rapids.

Boys

The Boys golf team has been slowly lowering their score and was able to finish in the top half of the M8 Conference during last Thursday’s meet hosted at Pebble Creek.

It was the 5th Mississippi8 Conference meet of the season and Becker was able to place fourth out of the 8 teams.

“We finished in fourth place at the meet and remain in fifth place overall in the Conference,” Coach Dan Olson said.  “Zach was the bright spot, tying for second place with a 78, while the rest of the squad is still struggling to eliminate the blow up holes in their rounds.”

Princeton remained the top team in the conference, as their top four golfers shot a combined round of 315 to run away with the top place finish.

Becker scores: Zach Stanz (78), Ethan Tobako (87), Tucker Rhodes (89), Matthew Martindale (90), Brayden Graning (91), Brock Ramola (101).

Friday, the team traveled to Rich Springs Golf Course in Cold Spring for the Pre-section meet.  At this meet, the teams get a chance to compete on the same course that will be used in Section play and at the same time they get to measure up the competition.  Becker came into the meet seeded 8th and that is where the Bulldogs finished after firing a combined round of 354.

Moorhead was the class of the event, shooting a 313 to edge our second place Sartell who had 318 strokes.

“All teams shot higher than normal scores due to the cold and wind,” Olson said.

Stanz again led the Bulldogs, finishing 3rd individually and carding a round of 76.
