Bulldog girls golf captures M8 title

It became official this week: the Becker Bulldog girls golf team was named the Mississippi 8 Conference champions!

After leading in the scores all season, Becker finished up its final meet Tuesday in Chisago Lakes and ended the season in first place.

The team was a model of consistency all season, finishing in first place in all but one conference meet en route to claiming the championship.

In honor of their consistent scores throughout the conference season and because of their overall ranking, four Bulldogs were named to the M8 All Conference team for finishing among the top golfers in the entire conference: Gretchen Graftaas, Ashley Reed, Emma Benson and Alexa Voller.

Coach Anna Babler was optimistic about her team as the squad convened for early season practices, but without having a formal season a year ago, she was unsure of how her girls would respond.  Now that they’ve accomplished earning a conference title, her appreciation for their efforts in obvious.

“The girls had a great season,” Babler said.  “Each and every one of our girls has stepped up throughout the season to give qualifying scores.  They are such fun, kind and dedicated girls!  We are looking forward to sections next week in Park Rapids at Headwaters.”

Annandale Scramble

Last Wednesday, the Bulldogs participated in the 2021 Annandale Scramble Invitational.  The format for this meet was a bit different, as the girls were paired up and used a scramble scoring system for the entirety of the match.  Avery Johnson and Alexa Voller came in sixth overall, winning a medal by shooting a combined score of 73.  The Bulldogs placed third overall with 148 strokes (the combined score of the top two pairings), while STMA finished in first with 134 strokes.

Graftaas and Benson teamed up to shoot a 75 for the Bulldogs, while Layla Mathews and Kylee Rick teamed up for an 88.

With the regular season over, the girls now head into section play with tee times scheduled for Thursday and Friday at Headwaters Country Club in Park Rapids.
