Bulldog girls continue to build on school records

Another two games, another two wins for the Becker Bulldog girls basketball team as they downed a pair of conference opponents within the past week. The victories stack up to a school record 35 game winning streak, as they have easily eclipsed the old record of 31 wins which was set by the state title team of 2007.

Monticello

Last Thursday, the team hosted the Monticello Magic and dominated in every statistical category, winning 93-27.

“We did a nice job winning the turnover battle 11 to 39 and we shot 59% to 23% for Monti,” said Coach Dan Baird, who noted his team was very unselfish in the game in collecting 30 assists.

“Our 1-2-2 press looked decent for putting it in just a week prior.”

It was a rout early, as both Adeline Kent and Maren Westin had over 20 points in the first half to lead the team to a big 58-20 halftime advantage.

Kent ended the game with 24 points on 11-for-14 shooting and she also had 8 assists and nine steals, coming up just shy of a triple-double.

“She played just like she practiced the day before, so it was nice to see that translate to the game,” said Baird.  “That’s not always the case with our girls, but this was a great example of a player on our team demonstrating that!”

Westin was also on fire as she scored 21 points, including a 4-for-7 performance from the three-point line to go along with seven assists and five steals.

“Maren also had a fantastic game,“ said Baird.  “She is shooting 51% from the three-point line this year and her anticipation on defense was excellent!”

Scoring: Julia Bengtson 17, Kent 24, Westin 21, Dani Nuest 2, Megan Gamble 14, Alexis Rose 3, Ayla Brown 2,  Liz Mackedanz 6, Evelyn Kreft 4.

Princeton

Tuesday night, Becker traveled to Princeton and again brought a balanced scoring attack in winning 87-38.  And as has been the case throughout the season, it was a different Bulldog stepping to the line to lead the team in scoring.

Ayla Brown poured in 19 points in the game, including 11 in the first half as Becker again was fast out of the gate to lead 47-19 at halftime.

“Ayla was all over the court tonight like a bumblebee,” said Baird, referring to Brown’s defense and energy throughout the game.

“She was canning the three pointers, too.”

Overall, it was a clean game as the Bulldogs were whistled for just nine total fouls and Princeton committed only eight.  Becker hit on 6-of-13 fouls shots, while the Tigers attempted just six, making three.

Scoring: Kent 14, Westin 9, Alayna Lindquist 4, Courtney Nuest 9, Bengtson 15, Gamble 9, Dani Nuest 7, Brown 19, Kreft 1.
