Last Thursday’s meet in Monticello gave the Becker track teams a chance to compete outdoors for the first time this season and the boys team responded well with a third place finish. Head Coach Paul Schmidt noted that there were several small modifications to the meet, but otherwise it was conducted similar to how meets were ran prior to Covid restrictions.
“There was no 3200 run and the 300 hurdles were changed to the 200 hurdles, but otherwise it was a normal co-ed contest,” said Schmidt.
Becker scored a total of 55 team points, with Monticello taking the win with its 108 team points. Other participants included Princeton (65 points) and the Northwest Nighthawks (26 points).
In this meet, points were awarded for individuals in 1st through 5th place, with the scoring system of six, four, three, two, and one points awarded, respectively. The top three relay teams also counted towards the team score and the teams were awarded six, four, or two points for their efforts.
Leading Becker on the individual side was senior Cade Stommes, who took first place in the Pole vault at 10’6” and won the triple jump with a leap of 35’10”. Cade was also part of the second place 4x400 team, along with Lukas Karel, Tyson Ricker, and Owen Angell (3:54.24).
Tyson Ricker took second place in the 1600 with a time of 4:45 and was part of the third place 4x800 relay team along with Karel, Mason Becker, and Alex Kinney (9:17).
Eighth grader Owen Angel had what Schmidt called “a great day”, placing second in the Pole Vault (10’) and third in the high jump ( 5’4”).
“This was the first time Owen competed in a meet in these events,” Schmidt noted. “He also took second place in the modified 200 Hurdle race with a time of 29.3.”
Schmidt also credited Mason Becker with running a great 800 race, as he finished second with a time of 2:24.87. Alex Kinney took third in the event with a time 2:30.91 to add two points to the Bulldogs’ total.
Carter Reckelberg continued to set personal records in both the triple jump — a 35’5” leap which was good for second place — and in the long jump with a 17’10.25” jump which was good for fourth place. Carter also earned a fourth place finish in the 400 with a time of 61.07.
Schmidt noted that Reckelberg and Alex Kinney are just eighth graders but have been stacking up well against the older competition.
“It was a great meet to again see our boys in action,” Schmidt said. “We were missing a few athletes due to injuries and illness so we are looking forward to Friday’s meet in Pierz where we should have our full team back.”
Becker was scheduled Tuesday this past week to travel to St. Francis but the meet was cancelled due to cold weather.
