Bulldog boys soccer downs Hornets, 7-0

The Becker boys soccer team put together a great first half last Thursday and took a commanding 5-0 lead en route to a 7-0 win over the Big Lake Hornets.

The offense was clicking for the Bulldogs, as they found the back of the net for their highest offensive output of the season.

Senior captain Micah Boyer opened the scoring for Becker at the 10 minute mark with a well taken free-kick just outside the 18 yard box. Just five minutes later, sophomore Tate Salvevold was fouled just outside the 18 and Boyer again stepped up to take it.

“It was honestly one of the best free-kicks I’ve ever seen at a high school game,” Coach Nick Crowley said.  “Micah put enough pace on the shot and had it curving into the top corner. Very well taken.”

Keeping with the five minute interval theme, senior captain Brekken Klug kept the same pace as he connected on a cross to Boyer, who scored his third goal of the game and a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs and Boyer were not done before the half,  as seniors Hudson Romfo and Kevin Vogl each found Boyer for his fourth and fifth goal of the night. The Bulldogs went into halftime up 5-0 behind Boyer’s five goal performance.

In the second half, the Bulldogs didn’t let up and 15 minutes into the second half, sophomore Evan Norberg found Boyer for his sixth goal of the evening.

“They couldn’t handle Micah’s speed, and on top of that, Micah was striking everything perfectly,” Crowley said.  “He (Boyer) was a menace.”

The final goal of the evening came from a corner by sophomore Rowen Klug finding freshman Cole Kalinowski for his first varsity goal.

“We were clicking on all fronts and everything was working for us,” Crowley said. “We could have possessed the ball more, but when the scoring opportunities opened, the boys took them.”

Monday night, the Bulldogs looked to carry their momentum into a road contest with M8 leader Chisago Lakes, but they came up short, 3-0.

“We went down 1-0 and panicked,” Crowley said. “We didn’t play well on turf and the other team was more physical. To their credit, Chisago played very well. They’re at the top of the conference and they showed why.”

Becker has just three games remaining on the season, including a home match with Willmar today (Saturday).
