The Becker boys track team took care of business last week and came away with the Section 5AA True Team Title to earn the Bulldogs a berth in the True Team State Tournament. It will be Becker’s first trip to the True Team championships since 1998.
“We have come so close the past few years and finally we were able to break away from the rest of the field and win the 13 team section meet,” Coach Paul Schmidt said.
Becker scored 705 points as a team which was plenty of room to outlast St Francis (620) and Rocori (613).
Senior Captain Carter Reckelberg was amazing, scoring 102 team points by winning the long jump and 200 meters, and taking second in the triple jump and 100 meters.
Senior Owen Angell finished with three first places, in the pole vault, 110 high hurdles and 300 hurdles.
“This is a team event where everyone scores as long as they finish the race and have a legal throw or jump,” Schmidt said of the True Team format. “It was a complete team effort with us having some consistent and a few surprising performances.”
Sophomore Isiah Boyer came through big for the Dogs, picking up a first place in the 400 meters and being part of the winning 4x400 relay team with Tanner Felton, Evan Hubbard, and Brandt Hemmelgarn. Felton also finished second in the 400 and was also part of the second place 4x800 team with Hemmelgarn, Hubbard, and Alex Swanson.
“Our throwers had good showings, scoring good points in the shot and discus,” Schmidt added. Zach Halvorson and Saul Kreft went 12th and 14th in the shot put, respectively, and seventh and ninth in the discus.
Hunter Youngdahl had what Schmidt called “a great high jump performance” placing fifth with a jump of 5’10”. Dalton Weisz pole vaulted to a third place finish, while Hemmelgarn and Hubbard scored big points in the 800 with fourth and fifth place finishes.
Parker Spindler placed well in the 1600 and 3200 as well as Alex Swanson in the 1600.
Mitchell Soltau, Weisz, Tristan Kowalkowski, and Tarver Schendzielos also grabbed a second place finish in the 4x100 meter relay. Schendzielos also scored well in the 100 and 200 meter races.
“I’m super proud of these guys, as we’ve been talking about True Team and the potential we had if we prepared and did what we were capable of,” Schmidt said. “We also feel that we left points out there that we could get in the State meet. We are looking forward to going down to state and having a great showing for Becker.”
