SENIOR JASON DILLY hopes to pick up right where he left off last season and helps lead his team to a state title in his final year as #1 singles player. Dilly — along with Dawson Brown, Erik Tungland and Austin Hill — will captain the team coached by Hokan Bengtson.

Boys Tennis Team Gets Year Off On Right Foot

The Becker Bulldog boys tennis team kicked off their 2014 spring season with a home meet indoors against Delano, Buffalo and Columbia Heights.

Becker finished the day 3-0, beating Delano 7-0, Buffalo 5-2 and Columbia Heights 7-0.

In the first match, Head Coach Hokan Bengtson moved Dawson Brown to #1 singles and Jason Dilly to #1 doubles with Erik Tungland. Brown won his match easily over sophomore Thomas Grover of Delano, 6-2, 6-2 while Dilly/Tungland beat Nate Petroski and James Henry, 6-2, 6-2.
 
At #2 singles, Becker’s Austin Hill knocked off Logan Dahl, 6-4, 6-3 and at #3 singles, Jackson Lefebvre beat Reiner Sjomeling, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Branden Roemer completed the singles sweep by dispatching of Cole Vosper, 6-3, 6-2.
 
In #2 doubles, Josiah Borst and Josh Duke took care of business against Sasha Johnson and Immy Johnson, 6-3, 6-3 while C.J. Howard and Joe Gudim erased Abram Mellgren and Eric Palan, 6-2, 6-2 in #3 doubles.

In the second match of the day, Dilly moved back to #1 singles and easily beat Andrew Christenson of Buffalo, 6-0, 6-1. Brown took over the #2 singles spot and had no problem with Cole Hanson, beating him 6-0, 6-0. At #3 singles, Hill took on Alex Haas and whooped him, 6-4, 6-1 and Lefebvre beat Sean Harnois 7-5, 6-4 at #4 singles.
 
The duo of Tungland/Howard lost their hard-fought #1 doubles match to Jake Jungwirth and Jordan Danielson, 7-6 (7-3), 5-7 (7-10). Borst and Duke won their match against Ryan Bunting and Donavan Catton, 6-1, 6-1 at #2 doubles and Dylan Sakry and Gudim lost their match against Tom Fredrickson and Drew Brogerding, 7-5, 3-6, (13-15) at #3 doubles.

In the final match of the day, Dilly cruised past Blake Kuether of Columbia Heights, 6-0, 6-0 in #1 singles, Brown defeated Tenzin Yeshi, 6-1, 6-1 at #2 singles, Hill beat Manij Ghishing, 6-0, 6-2 and Lefebvre knocked off Elyazid Chiboob, 6-0, 6-0 at #4 singles.
 
In doubles, Tungland and Howard beat Eddie Kuzko and Michael O’Leary, 6-2, 6-4, Borst and Duke knocked out Nick Hosch and Rachid Chiboob, 6-1, 6-1 and Roemer and Tyler Lindquist beat Xavier Mora and Farah Ahmed, 6-1, 6-0 to take #3 doubles.
 
“We had a great day of competition and I was proud of how the guys have prepared themselves this offseason,” said Bengtson. “We are returning some of the top players in the area in Dawson (Brown) and Jason (Dilly).  There are quite a few other guys that have put in the time this offseason to give us a chance to be a good team.  I will be looking to my captains, Dawson (Brown), Erik (Tungland), Austin (Hill) and Jason (Dilly) to lead us.”
 
The boys next take on Anoka and Red Wing on the road today (Saturday). They head to Monticello Tuesday, then Mora Thursday (weather permitting).
