Senior Blake Angell, Junior Kaj Fritsch and Junior Justin Reichle were nominated by the players to be our team captains this season. The team has high expectations of the captains to help lead the team both on and off the field this year. Although they lost five seniors last year, they are encouraged and feeling positive about the group of freshmen joining the team.
The boys’ lacrosse team has been making slight adjustments each year that continue to build towards a redefined offense. They want to continue that progress for 2018.
“Our goaltenders are high on the list of goals,” says Coach Paul VanVoorhis. “We want to quickly stabilize our goaltending changes. Junior AJ Buntrock becomes the starting varsity goaltender and freshman Dominic Esler will start as our junior varsity goaltender. It will be important for Buntrock to mentor Esler for future development, because our goaltenders are vital to clearing the ball from defense to offense.”
They have a difficult game schedule this season. Many tough teams are participating in the conference, but the boys’ lacrosse team learned a tremendous amount of information from the teams they faced last year and plan to make adjustments accordingly. The larger schools they have to face have rather large teams, sometimes three times the amount of players Becker fields. It can be challenging when Becker does not have the same depth as their opponents.
Overall, the team is looking forward to being outside more and helping develop the younger team. Practices will play a big role in shaping the team’s strengths, but the cold weather makes it difficult to be able to reserve indoor space for practices, given that so many other sports have to go inside when it’s snowing.
Their first game of the season is April 20 against Chisago Lakes.
