The Minnesota High School All-Star Football Game — an annual event since 1974 — was first played in 1945. High School All-Star Football games were played in 1945, 1946 and 1952 through 1960 before the current annual series began at Memorial Stadium in 1974.

The game has been played at 11 locations during its history, with the former Parade Stadium (Minneapolis) being the most frequent site (19 games).

Through the years, over 4,300 players and 450 coaches have participated in this game. A total of 91 players and coaches from the All-Star Football Game have played or coached in the National Football League.

Matt Veldman, a participant in the 2007 all-star game, went on to play at NDSU and with the Detroit Lions of the NFL. He went undrafted in 2012, but spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Redskins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squads.

Becker has had 27 all-stars throughout the years with the first one being Troy Robinson in 1986. Others include Kory Olson (1990), Jason Pfingsten (1991), Dwight Lundeen (1994 and 2013), Matt Lundeen (1994), Brandon Novak (1996), John Treptau (1998), Joel Olson (1999), Tom Stanger (2000), Jarod Posthumus  (2001), Kyle Potter (2003), Tyler Hart  (2004), Derek Potter (2005), Eric Bergman  (2006), Tim Langer (2006),  Matt Veldman (2007), Jake Gibbons  (2009), Gavin Brown (2011), Tom Chirhart (2013), Mike Lundeen  (2013), Brett Watercott  (2013), Mason Olson  (2014), Dawson Brown (2015), Michael Veldman (2015), Beau Pauly (2016) and Casey Vesledahl (2016).

Twelve All-Star players have played or coached in the Super Bowl and six have played in the NFL Pro Bowl All-Star Game.

Originally played in a North versus South format, the game switched to a Metro versus Outstate format in 1980. The Metro versus Outstate format was played for 31 years, ending in 2010. The North versus South format returned in 2011.

Last year, the All-Star Football Game saw big changes:

• The Minnesota Vikings became the primary sponsors of the All-Star Game, with the event now known as the Minnesota Football Showcase;

• The All-Star Game became a post-season event instead of a summer event. The game was played on Dec. 3, one week after the Prep Bowl;

•  The new location is US Bank Stadium;

• South won the 2016 contest, 15-7.

Sidney is the son of Tammy and Robin Boros of Becker.
