Bobby Lee wrestles way to MMA win

Becker’s Bobby Lee recently won his Legacy Fighting Alliance match against Lucas Clay and his high school wrestling career might have led to his 14th professional MMA win.

Lee used a double leg maneuver in the second round to score a huge slam, and the move led to some much needed momentum as the Becker graduate improved his professional record to 14-8.

Fighting in the 160 pound weight class, Lee put his opponent on the mat within the first 20 seconds of round one, but was caught in a guillotine just a second later.

“It took me 90 seconds to patiently work out of that move,” Lee said after the match.  “After my head popped out, I was in a half mount looking for my own guillotines and Kimuras.”

A Kimura is a move that isolates the shoulder and elbow joints and allows a MMA fighter to apply painful pressure on his opponents’ joints. A guillotine is a submission choke hold that is used in many levels of MMA combat.

Lee used his wrestling skills in the second round, gaining a takedown at the 30 second mark, followed by a serioes of scrambles.  Lee’s opponent had tried a whizzer kick and it forced Bobby up against the fence, but Lee turned the tables with a spin and a knee to Clay’s abdomen led to a quick double leg. From there, Lee took control of the match with his monster slam.

“I took two steps back away from the fence and slammed Lucas Clay to definitely win the second round,” Lee said.

Round three involved lots of circling and the exchanging of some strikes and Clay then put forth his best offensive hold of the night, a Darce choke hold.

“Fortunately my coaches, Ben Locken and Brock Larson had covered the defense to this choke in the pre-fight warmup,” Lee said.

Going into his 22nd professional fight, Lee said the game plan was to be patient and set up the takedowns without forcing the action. The game plan worked and Lee was thrilled to emerge victorious.

He now has plans to continue training and coaching, trying to spread his love of MMA to anyone interested.

“Anyone who wants to learn MMA make sure to check out the Cellar gym in Roseville, Minnesota,” Lee said. “Everyone can do some level of martial arts! I suggest starting in a kickboxing bag class to build your base and as you get more comfortable check out Muay Thai.”

Lee said he is expecting his next match towards the end of 2023 or early 2024 and invites anyone from the Becker area to follow his career on his social media accounts: bobbyleemma.
