Boaters Safety In February?

“It was an incredibly awesome day at the Becker High School!” shared Dusty Wright, director of the Becker Bass Team.

The Becker High School Bass Team hosted the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary boaters safety course, which was open to the public. Sixty-two Completion Certificates were handed out after a final test. Forty-four students will get their Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources boaters safety certificate!

“It was a fun day where we were able to do some hands-on training and demonstrations,” said Wright. “Using the pool, we taught different styles of life safety options including throwable ropes, vests and inflatables.”

In the auditorium, the groups were taught with slides and safety videos.

“(It was what we needed to do) to keep everyone’s attention the best we could for the eight-hour course,” said Wright. “It was presented well as it showed with several high scores on the tests!”

Information given during the class included areas such as US aids to navigation, operating one’s vessel safely, sound signals, and anchoring guidelines.

Students from Minnesota high school bass teams came from Byron, Monticello, Minnewaska, Elk River, Sauk Rapids and more!  This was the second year in a row Becker Bass hosted the event.

Multiple groups came together to provide the courses including the Coast Guard Auxilliary volunteers, Becker High School, Becker Community Education, MN DNR, Sherburne County Water Patrol, custodial staff and many Becker Bass team volunteers.

With all of the help, the program ran smoothly and on time.

“The smiles and excitement on student faces was fun to see as they passed the final test,” said Wright.  “The Becker Bass team would like to thank all of their sponsors and everyone involved. We are creating some awesome opportunities and memories! We couldn’t do it without everyone’s help.”
