BLHS E-Sports has excellent showing at state

The Big Lake E-Sports league recently sent several players to compete at the state level. Students demonstrated their proficiency withSuper Smash Bros. and League of Legends, representing their school.

The Super Smash Bros. competition was held January 13th. Big Lake students (last names withheld for student privacy) Kameron and Asher tied for seventh place, and Cody took ninth. The three were able to advance in the competition.

Representing Big Lake in the League of Legends competition were Jace, Amando, Ty, Vejay, and Ben. The team competed January 15th, but was eliminated after the first round.

Big Lake has had an E-Sports team for about three years now, going to state each year.

What is E-Sports?

E-Sports is similar to other sports, except the students play video games. Students pick their games, such as League of Legends, Super Smash Bros., Minecraft, or other games, and compete against other students or teams in the Minnesota Varsity League.

Currently, the Big Lake E-Sports League has about 30 participating students over 15 teams.

Coach Jared Czech said that several students approached him, asking him to be their coach, about three years ago, and he’s been happy to help the students become better players since then.

Season Overview

Czech said the students had a great season this year, with many other teams coming very close to competing at state. The competitions are very competitive, but the Big Lake students held their own all season.

Before sending the students on to state, BLHS held a huge sendoff, where students lined the halls and wished the players the best as they headed off to their competition.

Czech said more students advanced to state this year than in any other year of the league’s history, and it was an awesome experience for the students.

It will be no surprise if the Big Lake E-Sports teams have another excellent showing next year.
