BL wrestlers take 4th at home invitational

The Big Lake wrestling team finished fourth at their own eight-team invitational last Friday.

The Hornets had two individual champions and five other wrestlers placed in the top five spots in their weight class.

Cash Stortz won the title at 133 pounds. The senior pinned Drew Anderley of Spectrum at 0:27 in his first match. He beat Miles Wildman of Minnewaska Area (MA), 6-4, then beat Westin Ingram of Amery, 10-6 in the championship match.

Dallas Sibbet won the 152-pound title. The senior opened with a pin of Chayce Dosch of Amery at 1:13. He pinned Ed Chickering of Spectrum at 0:37, then beat Cash Fussy of Pierz, 10-1 in the final.

Liam Mayer placed third at 189 pounds. The sophomore opened by pinning Logan Johnson of KMS at 1:10.  After a loss by pin to Jayden Zajac of Pierz, he pinned Nate Jorgenson of Spectrum at 3:57, then beat Connor Hennessy of Pierz, 13-0.

Austin Frederickson took third at 215 pounds. After an opening round loss by pin to champion Sutton Kenning of St. Cloud Tech, the junior won his next three matches. He beat Carter Allen of Sartell, 9-1. He pinned Eric Bowen of MA at 3:38, then beat Gavyn Feldman of KMS, 6-1 in his last match.

At 121, Grant Volk finished fourth. The sophomore had two wins: a 15-4 major decision over Soren Jorgenson of MA and a 13-0 major decision over Karsen Fenger of MA.

Caleb Smith took fourth at 160 pounds. The junior had two wins: a pin of Sawyer Erickson of MA at 3:58 and a 7-3 decision over Aiden Sund of Spectrum.

Alex Omann finished fifth at 139 pounds. He had two wins: a pin of Mustafa Abshir of St. Cloud Tech at 2:33 and a pin of Caleb Ashler of MA at 0:42 in his final match.

Final team scores were: 1. Pierz 209.5; 2 Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 185.0; 3. Minnewaska Area 167.5; 4. Big Lake 122.0; 5. Saint Cloud Tech 105.5; 6. Amery 100.0; 7. Sartell 93.0; 8. Spectrum 52.0.

A day earlier the Hornets lost to Annandale-Maple Lake 52-23 and Foley, 47-21 in a triangular meet.

The Hornets won four matches against Annandale-Maple Lake.

At 107, Hayden Bessette pinned Brayden Hardin at 3:40.

Cash Stortz pinned Cassen Brumm at 3:15 at 133 pounds.

At 152, Dallas Sibbet beat AJ Bogatzki by tech fall, 18-3.

At 189, Carson Gellerman pinned Carter Courtright at 3:28.

The Hornets also won four matches against Foley.

Cash Stortz pinned Simon Brenny at 0:30 at 133 pounds.

Dallas Sibbet beat Tyler Wilhelm, 17-11 at 152 pounds.

At 189, Carson Gellerman pinned Liam Bruflodt at 3:35.

Austin Frederickson pinned Messiah Vizenor at 6:37 at 285.

The Hornets wrestled against Monticello and Cambridge-Isanti in a triangular meet Thursday and are competing in the Maple Grove Invitational today (Saturday), results next week.
