The Hornets softball team lost 7-3 to the Saints on Monday in Big Lake. St. Francis was able to build an early advantage, and three Big Lake errors proved to be the difference in the game.
The visitors got on the board quickly with three runs on four hits in the top of the first. And extended their lead to 6-0 in the second off two Hornet errors.
Big Lake’s offense got going in the bottom half of the second. Katie Chaffee led off with a walk and then three consecutive hits by Amber Windorski, Sam Nohrenberg, and Katlyn Baron scored two runs. A few batters later Ava Prosser drew a walk with the bases loaded to score another run and cut the deficit to 6-3.
The Hornets threatened again in the third with runners on first and second but were unable to drive in a run. Those would be the last baserunners for Big Lake as St. Francis shut down the Hornet offense the last four innings. The Saints added an insurance run in the top of the fifth which made the final 7-3.
Macy Bowne pitched the first 5.2 innings allowing six hits and three earned runs while striking out three. Chaffee, Windorski, Nohrenberg, Baron, and Maddie Wilson each had a hit for the team. Nohrenberg and Baron each had an RBI.
This week the team will play at Becker on Thursday before travelling to Forest Lake for a tournament on Saturday. After that they will head to Chisago Lakes next Tuesday.
