BL Legion starts season with 2 losses to Saints

The Big Lake American Legion Baseball team got off to a rough start last week, dropping a doubleheader at St. Francis.

The Hornets were held to two hits in an 11-1 loss in the first game.

The Saints started quickly with four runs in the home first off Big Lake starter Dreeson Millam.

They added a run in the second, two more in the third and another in fourth off three different pitchers.

Big Lake’s only run came in the top of the fourth when Austin Schleif singled, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and was driven home on a single by Austin Davis.

Leading 8-1 in the fifth, the Saints reached reliever Dawson Veldhuizen for three runs on three hits and three walks to end the game by the 10-run rule.

The second game followed a similar pattern, with the Saints taking a quick lead and adding to it throughout the game. They scored four runs in the first, two in the second and six more in the third.

Six different Big Lake pitchers couldn’t find a way to stop St. Francis from scoring. Although those pitchers allowed a total of just four hits, they walked 13 batters. Four errors also contributed to the final score of 15-0.

Three Hornets had hits in the game. Dreeson Millam and Connor Lundquist both singled in the first inning. Ian Tough had a double in the third.

Big Lake was scheduled to play doubleheaders against Rush City and Milaca over the past week, results next week.
