The Big Lake baseball won two more games over the past week.
Last Friday the Hornets pounded out 19 hits and scored 14 runs in a 14-2 win over Sauk Rapids-Rice on the road.
The game started out slowly for both teams, with neither team scoring in the first two innings. That changed dramatically in the third when Big Lake exploded for six runs.
The Storm reached Big Lake starter Jackson LaRoche for a run in the home third, then added another in the fourth to cut the gap to 6-2.
But that was as close as they’d get. The Hornets added three runs in the fifth and closed the deal with five more in the seventh.
LaRoche picked up the win. He allowed two runs on five hits. He walked five and struck out eight. Caleb Martin came in to get the final out.
At the plate, Caleb Martin had four hits, scored twice and drove in three runs. Brendan Goedker had four hits, an RBI and scored two runs. Trenton Throolin had three hits, drove in two runs and scored three. Cooper Cusick had two hits and scored twice. Austin Schleif doubled and drove in three runs. Blayne Varner singled twice, drove in a run and scored one.
It was a completely different story a day earlier when the Hornets had just four baserunners in a 3-0 loss to Foley in extra innings.
Owen Wilczek started on the mound for Big Lake and was unhittable. The hard-trowing right hander went the first 7.2 innings and allowed no hits and two walks while striking out 17.
The Falcons reached relievers William Bilben and Cooper Cusick for all three runs (one earned) in the ninth inning on one hit, two walks and a hit batter.
Cusick, Goedker and Wilczek had the only three hits for the Hornets.
Last Tuesday, LaRoche had another strong pitching performance in a 10-2 win over Zimmerman.
Big Lake took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first and never trailed the rest of the way.
The Thunder got an unearned run off LaRoche in the second to pull closer. But the Hornets pushed across a run in the third, then added five more in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Martin pitched the fifth and sixth inning in relief and allowed an unearned run on no hits and four walks. He struck out six. Bilben pitched a scoreless seventh.
At the plate, Cusick singled, walked, scored a run and drove in two. Throolin had two hits and an RBI. Goedker doubled, walked, scored a run and drove in one. Martin doubled, scored a run and drove in one. Schleif singled, scored a run and had one RBI. Conner Lundquist singled, walked, drove in a run and scored twice.
The Hornets also took advantage of eight stolen bases and four errors by Zimmerman.
The Hornets are 6-3 in the conference and 8-4 overall. They played games against Princeton, Rockford and Maple Lake over the past week, results next week. They visit Monticello Monday, Fridley Tuesday and host Cambridge-Isanti 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
