Big Lake volleyball tournament recap

The Hornets travelled to Dassel-Cokato last Saturday for a tournament where the team took on a number of different teams throughout the day.

In the pool play round Big Lake’s opponents were the Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles, Rockford Rockets, and the Kimball Cubs.

The opening contest against the Eagles was a thrilling match which the Hornets eventually lost, but the team fought to the end with scores of 31-29 and 26-24.

Then, Big Lake lost 2-0 to both Rockford and Kimball to round out pool play. The Hornets concluded their day by defeating the host Dassel-Cokato Chargers 2-0 in the bracket round.

Marissa Reed finished the day with 22 digs, 19 kills, two blocks, and one ace serve. Emma Nagorski added 30 digs and 14 kills. The pair of Ashley Fitzgibbons and Kamrynn Tschritter were once again responsible for distributing the ball around. Fitzgibbson had 22 set assists to go along with 13 digs, and Tschritter posted 35 assists with an astounding nine ace serves. Tying Nagorski for the team lead in digs with 30 was Madison Reed who also contributed 11 kills.

This Tuesday, the team also travelled to St. Francis, where they suffered a close conference loss. Big Lake dominated the first set with a 25-17 win but faltered in the next two, losing 26-24 and 25-17. Staring at a 2-1 deficit and facing defeat, the Hornets answered back with a 25-18 win to tie the match at two apiece. However, the comeback fell short in the fifth set when the Fighting Saints prevailed 15-10 to take the set and the match.

The Hornets continue their season with a home conference matchup against the Monticello Magic this Thursday.
