Big Lake ends season with 2-0 loss to Eagles

The Big Lake baseball team ended its season with a 2-0 loss to Totino-Grace in their fourth game of the Section 5AAA playoffs Tuesday.

It was a low-scoring game, with neither team putting together a lot of offense.

The Eagles got an early run in the first off Big Lake pitcher Owen Wilczek, and it stayed that way until they added their second run in the fourth.

Brendan Goedker came in to get the final out of the inning, then pitched two more scoreless innings.

Big Lake’s offense struggled and couldn’t put anything on the scoreboard against two different pitchers for the Eagles.

Caleb Martin reached base three times with a hit, a walk and was hit by a pitch. Goedker had a single and Conner Lundquist reached on a walk. But that was all the offense for the Hornets.

Wilczek took the loss. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks in 3.2 innings. He struck out six. Goedker walked a batter and struck out three in 2.1 innings.

The Hornets reached the fourth round with two consecutive outstanding performances after an opening-round 10-0 defeat to Princeton.

Pitchers Owen Wilczek and Jackson LaRoche not only won their games, but neither allowed a hit in two combined no-hitters.

Last Thursday, Wilczek started against Fridley and was completely dominant. The hard-throwing right hander didn’t allow a baserunner. Wilczek struck out seven of the first nine batters he faced and left with one out in the fifth inning.

LaRoche came in to pitch the final 2.2 innings and also didn’t allow a baserunner.

Wilczek faced 13 batters and struck out nine. LaRoche faced eight batters and struck out four.

On offense, the Hornets took an early lead when LaRoche cleared the bases with a triple in the first inning. Caleb Martin doubled in a run and Trenton Throolin doubled in another for Big Lake’s other two runs.

Martin had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run. Conner Lundquist singled, walked and scored a run. LaRoche drove in three runs. Jason Skoglund and Cooper Cusick each had a hit.

Last Saturday it was LaRoche who started on the mound against Becker, and Big Lake won easily, 11-1.

The Bulldogs broke the shutout in the first inning, scoring an unearned run on two walks and an error.

But that was the extent of their offense as LaRoche retired the side and completed the second inning without any more damage. Wilczek came in to pitch in the third inning. He struck out eight of the nine batters he faced as the game was called by the 10-run rule after the fifth inning.

On offense, the Hornets broke out with three runs in the first, two in the second and five in the third for a 10-0 lead. The game was called when Big Lake scored a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Martin had a single, double, walk, scored a run and drove in five. Austin Schleif singled, walked, scored a run and drove in one. LaRoche walked, drove in a run and scored one. Cusick singled, walked and scored twice. Blayne Varner singled, was hit by a pitch and scored two runs. Brendan Goedker walked and scored three times. Throolin singled and walked.

The Hornets finished the season with a 12-7-1 record and were 2-2 in the playoffs.
