The Big Lake baseball team won a game, lost one and tied one over the past week.
Vs. Princeton
Last Tuesday, Owen Wilczek had another masterful performance in a 2-0 shutout over Princeton.
The junior right-hander allowed just one hit and walked three batters in 5.2 innings. He struck out 14.
The Hornets didn’t put up many numbers on offense, but it was enough to get the win. Caleb Martin had a solo home run to start things off in the first.
Brendan Goedker had Big Lake’s only other hit. Blayne Varner scored the second run after a walk in the third inning.
Jackson LaRoche pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowed a walk and struck out two to pick up the save.
Vs. Rockford
Last Thursday, the Hornets played a game they’d rather forget in a 14-0 loss to Rockford in a five-inning game.
Conner Lundquist started on the mound and was relieved in the second inning by William Bilben. In those two innings the Rockets scored 10 runs, but only one was earned.
Rockford scored two runs off Bilben in the fourth and added their final two runs in the fifth off Jason Skoglund.
Meanwhile, the Hornets couldn’t put anything together at the plate. They managed four singles by Jackson LaRoche, Cooper Cusick, Caleb Martin and Lundquist. Cusick and Bilben also walked, but that was the extent of their offense.
Lundquist was tagged with the loss. He allowed 10 runs (one earned) on five hits and five walks. He struck out one batter.
Bilben allowed two earned runs on one hit and four walks. Skoglund allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk.
Austin Schleif got the final two outs. He walked one and struck out one.
Vs. Magic
Monday, the Hornets and Monticello Magic played to a 4-4 tie. The game was suspended after seven innings.
Tuesday’s game against Fridley was cancelled due to heavy rain. It will not be rescheduled.
The Hornets were scheduled to play Cambridge-Isanti Thursday, results next week.
The Hornets are 7-3-1 in the conference and 9-5-1 overall on the season. The section tournament begins Tuesday (May 27) at the home field of the high seed and continues on Thursday with the second round game.
