Becker Legion Baseball Finishes Strong

It took manager Matt Eigen and his Becker legion baseball team a few weeks to hit their stride, but that’s exactly what happened as they won three of their final four games, including a pair of contests last week to finish their season.  Because of the pandemic, there was no District or State tournaments scheduled for this year.

“We really turned it around the last couple of weeks,” said Eigen, who noted that his team came back to defeat two teams it had lost to handily earlier in the season.  “Our last two games were awesome and we played with a total team effort.”

Last Tuesday the team held on for a 7-6 win over STMA behind a strong pitching performance from Will Thorn.  He started the game on the mound and went six innings, striking out seven hitters.  Cam Fischer came in to pitch the 7th inning and picked up the save.

Becker came out swinging in the game, notching three runs in the first and two more in the second inning.  It was all tied up at six runs apiece in the bottom of the 6th inning when Matt Huffman singled and advanced to third on a past ball and a wild pitch.  Luke Eigen then picked up the game winning RBI with a solid base hit to give Becker the win.

Eigen, Zach Wenner and Noah Mohs were all 2-for-3 in the game to lead the offensive effort.

The team followed that game up last Thursday with a 10-4 trouncing of Princeton in the season finale.

Becker again received a fine effort from its starting pitcher, as Bennett Tatge went six innings before Jackson Thorn finished off the final inning on the mound.

Becker tallied five runs in the second inning, including an RBI double from Will Thorn who finished 2-for-4.

Mohs was the offensive leader in the game, as he finished just a double shy of hitting for the cycle in a 3-for-4 performance that included a solo home run in the 5th inning.

“I am proud of what the players were able to do this year,” added Eigen.  “The last two weeks our team chemistry was excellent and everyone contributed to a great end to our season.”
