Becker Horseshoe Tourney Held

The Clank and Thud Horseshoe Club held its spring horseshoe tourney called the “Rhubarb Rumble” April 14 at the American Legion courts. Pitchers came in the snowstorm from St. Paul, Columbia Heights and Park Rapids. Russ Girtz of Becker was the tournament director and did a great job.

Eleven-year-old Marshal Swenson of Garfield pitched in the morning Class B and won the class with a 4 and 1 record. Since he is considered a cadet, he pitched from half court, averaging 24.8% ringers. His only loss came on his last game to Lance Van Wyhe of Park Rapids, 35 to 32. Don Claseman of St. Cloud took second place with 3 wins and 2 losses and a 30% average.

Class A started at 12:15 p.m. and Jim Aleckson of Becker took first place with a 4-1 record, averaging 61%. His high game of 75% was the second game against Brian Wipper of Palmer. Bob Knudtson of Columbia Heights took second place, also with a 4-1 record.

However, Bob lost the head-to-head game with Aleckson and he averaged 45.5% ringers. Russ Girtz finished third with a 3-2 record. Dick Dvorak of St. Paul gave Aleckson his only loss in the last game, so his drive home in the snow felt better.

The Becker club has 10 pitchers and is finishing its fourth season in a couple weeks. Anyone interested in joining the club for the next season should call Russ Girtz at 763-370-1296.

The Santiago Horseshoe Club will be holding its spring meeting on May 14 at 7 p.m. in Santiago to kick off its 29th season. Anyone interested in joining this league should contact Jim Aleckson at 763-261-2336.
