Becker horseshoe club holds open tournament

The “Clank & Thud” club have been pitching at the old fire hall in Becker the last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

April 10, they had the chance to bring it all back outdoors where it belongs.

“It was great to get back in action again,” said Pitcher Jim Aleckson.

Class C started the day at 8:30 a.m. with an eight-person class. The Becker pitchers did quite well with Anthony Stach winning five and losing just two.

Sixteen-year-old Alexandrite Tom Kremer also went 5-2 in Class C but lost his head-to-head with Stach for second place. Fourteen-year-old Marshall Swenson of Garfield was third.

In Class B, Russ Girtz — the club’s president — won a very contested six-person class with a 3-2 record, tying Jerry Werk of Donnelly from the western part of the state. Werk had a 3-2 record also and finished second on a tie-breaker.

Patty Oaks of Roseville came in third with her duble flip and a 2-1/2 - 2-1/2 record.

In Class C, Myron Vanderweyst of Rice posted a 5-0 record to win the class. Three others came in a tie for second with 3-2 records and in the tie-breaker, Brad Heath of Blaine took second, Jim Aleckson was third and Jerry Hokkula of South Haven took the fourth place spot. Hokkula had the high ringer percentage at 59.7%.

The next tournament for the horseshoe club is at the Becker Courts May 1 with Josh Olson of Bertha directing the tournament.
