Head Coach Anna Babler enters her eighth season in charge of the program with a clear goal: pursuing a fifth consecutive Mississippi 8 Conference championship.
“We have won the conference title the last four years and are hoping to take the title again,” Babler said last week as the team wrapped up another early season practice.
The pursuit of a fifth straight title is certainly a tangible goal, as the Bulldogs return a wealth of experience in the form of nine returning girls, along with three new additions to the team.
The Bulldogs’ title drive will be led by stellar senior Layla Mathews, who last year made the MSHSL State Tournament held at Bunker Hills.
“We are hoping to see some of our players there again this year,” Babler said, referring to the state tournament.
Mathews will serve as team captain along with Emilia Strong, a junior.
As Babler and her team have established a championship tradition the past several years, they have also drawn a considerable following from the Pebble Creek Women’s Club, as the group’s members team up to support the girls throughout the season.
Pebble Creek enjoyed an early season opening this year with the mild spring weather, allowing additional practice time for the team.
The Bulldogs will open their season on Monday, April 14 with a meet at Pebble Creek - the Lady Bulldog Invite. Becker’s other home match will take place on Mon., April 28, as the team will host a Mississippi 8 Conference match.
Conference play will end on Wednesday, May 21, at which time the Bulldogs will find out if they have earned their fifth straight conference title and the privilege of calling themselves a dynasty.
Section play starts a week later, while the state tournament will take place in early June.
