Practicing after school at the golf course every day, the Becker Bulldogs Girls Golf team is excited for the start of their season.
This is head coach Anna Babler’s second year coaching the varsity girls team; previously she spent three years coaching junior high golf.
“I’m excited to be able to bring a full team of six girls to our varsity meets this year,” said Babler. “Last year having only four girls made it difficult at times. I’m looking forward to seeing the girls gain confidence in themselves and improving on their game.”
Numbers for the Bulldogs girls golf team are up this year, with 11 members in grades seven through 12th, including three sophomores, one freshman and junior high students.
Although there aren’t any seniors on the team this year there are three returning players, sophomore captain Gretchen Graftass, sophomore Kylee Rick and eighth grader Emma Benson.
The team officially started practice inside March 18 working on different skills. The last couple weeks they’ve been able to head outside to make the most of the open areas on the golf course.
“We’re a pretty young team,” said Babler. “We’re working on keeping our mind in the game, focusing on our strengths and working on our short game.”
The team’s first meet was an invitational at Monticello Country Club on Monday against several other schools.
“We have many things to work on, but it was exciting to actually get out on the course in time for the start of the season,” said Babler. “I’ve seen some great improvements among some of my returning players and am excited to see what this year brings.”
The team will have a busy upcoming week. This Thursday’s invitational at Pebble Creek was rescheduled to this upcoming Thursday, April 18 due to the weather.
With meets also scheduled for Monday at Spring Brook Golf Course and Wednesday at Stones Throw Golf Course, the athletes will have plenty of opportunities for continuing to better their game and show off improved skills.
