Becker Big Lake Hockey Team Are Back In Action

The Becker Big Lake varsity hockey Eagles play in the Two Rivers Conference. The Eagles are coached by Doug Fredrichs. This is what he had to say about his team.

“We are a small team of 15 players, five seniors, six  juniors, two sophomores and three freshmen,” he said.

“Justin Morrow is a junior goal-tender who will be making his first varsity start,” Friedrichs said. “Defensemen are sophomore Jake Piehl, sophomore Ryan Murnane, junior Lyndon Carlson, senior Adam Schug and freshmen Alec Doran.”

“The forwards are senior Brandon Christianson, senior Taylor Giving, senior Nick Stalpes, freshman Travis Ferris, junior Owen Houghton, junior Fedor Guchikov, freshman Adam Schug, and junior Nick Cencer rounding out the front line,” he said.

“The Eagles are looking to contend for the Two River Conference championship again this year,” he said. “Last year they lost by only one point for the conference championship. They had their best season ever for the program that has been around for 15 years with a 14-12 record.”   The coaching staff is back from last year. Besides head coach Doug Friedrichs, they include assistants Scott Barta and Tim Houghton. “We are playing just a varsity schedule this year due to the numbers but with the youth program numbers  up, we will again be a two-team squad in the 2015-2016 season,” Coach Fredrichs said.

The Eagles played a scrimmage game against the Princeton Tigers Tuesday evening, losing 10-1.

“What will help is a new arena that needs to be built in the area for the program to take off,” Coach Fredrichs said. “Right now we are losing kids to other programs or just quitting because of all the travel."

Weston Schug scored the Eagles’ only goal in the first period in Tuesday’s game, assisted by Nick Stalpes. Justin Morrow was the goalie leader with .787 percent saves. Stalpes was assist and points leader in the game.

The Hornets play Northern Lakes from the Brainerd area Saturday at Breezy Point Ice Arena. Tuesday, the Eagles take on Moose Lake Area at home at the Princeton Ice Arena at 7:15 p.m.
