Alexa Guy heading to state wrestling

Alexa Guy is Big Lake’s lone representative at the state wrestling tournament this year.

The ninth-grader (15-1) took the girls Section 6 title two weeks ago in the 130-pound weight class, going undefeated at the tournament without allowing a single point in four matches.

The state tournament took place Thursday through Saturday, results next week.

The varsity boys finished out their season Friday and Saturday at the Section 6AA Tournament at Rocori.

First and second place in each weight class moved on to the state meet. No Big Lake wrestler qualified, but three Hornets placed in the top six in their weight class.

Elijah Schaller (29-11) had the highest finish for Big Lake, taking fourth at 114 pounds. The junior opened by pinning Odin Duncombe of Becker at 3:55. He lost a 12-6 decision to champion Clayton Birkholtz of Howard Lake-Wavery-Winsted.

He came back to beat Colton Carlson of Albany by tech fall, 19-4 but lost, 9-0 to Connor Faber of Rocori in his final match.

Austin Frederickson (27-10) placed fifth at 215 pounds. The senior took a 9-7 decision from Maverick Kotschevar of Albany in his first match. He lost, 7-3 to champion Aiden Golley of Becker, then lost by pin to Cooper Notch of Rocori. He beat Nathaniel Belair of Zimmerman by tech fall, 15-0 in his final match.

Liam Mayer (20-14) was sixth at 189 pounds. The junior beat Gus Baldry of Becker by tech fall, 17-2 in his first match He lost by pin to champion Connor Plumski of Albany in his second match, then lost to Isaac Thiele of Sauk Rapids-Rice and Gus Baldry in his final match.
