Five members of the Big Lake wrestling team are headed to the state tournament after finishing in the top two spots in their weight class at the Section 6AA championships last weekend at Becker.
Nolan Reiter (30-3) was the only individual champion for the Hornets. He was also section champ last season. After a first-round bye, the senior pinned Bryce Schoen of Monticello at 1:21. He beat Sam Miller of Zimmerman by tech fall, 20-5 in the semifinals before beating Cole Rudnitski of Foley, 12-6 in the title match.
Zack Smith (30-10) took second at 138 pounds. The junior had a first-round bye before pinning Mason Brown of Monticello at 1:01. He followed that with an 8-3 decision over Noah Gindele of Annandale-Maple Lake before losing to Tyson Charmoli of St. Francis by tech fall, 23-8. Smith then beat Drew May of Becker, 7-0 in his final match.
Sophomore Carson Gellerman (30-10) finished second at 170 pounds. After a bye, he beat Nathan Soldner of ROCORI, 12-0. He followed that with an 18-4 major decision over Riley Hall of Annandale-Maple Lake before losing a close 4-3 decision to Parker Adkins of Princeton. Gellerman finished with a 7-1 win over Brady Pelletier of St. Francis in his final match.
Freshman Johnathon Murphy (7-1) placed second at 182 pounds. Murphy spent most of the season on the sidelines after reaching the state meet as an eight-grader last year. After a bye, he pinned Christian Rodriguez of ROCORI at 0:53. He pinned Shay McClory of Annandale-Maple Lake at 2:41 before losing to undefeated Tate Link of Dassel-Cokato-Litchfield, 9-7. In his final match, he beat Owen Angell of Becker, 12-7.
Kane Lapointe (31-10) was second at 285 pounds. After a bye, the senior pinned Luis Serrato of Dassel-Cokato-Litchfield at 0:47. He pinned Ben Bauer of Monticello at 3:41. He lost in the championship match to Dylan Kolby of Becker, 3-1 in overtime.
The state tournament is this weekend at Xcel Energy Center.
